How to photograph blooming heather

  • Backlight: shoot towards the low sun (early morning or golden hour), the tiny flowers light up and the whole field starts to glow.
  • Low viewpoint: crouch down or get even lower. From eye level you mostly see ground, close to the ground you see a sea of purple all the way to the horizon.
  • Polarising filter: removes the haze from the tiny leaves, deepens the purple and adds contrast to the sky. Turn the filter slowly and watch for where the effect is strongest.
  • Check the fog forecast: at least as important as the weather report. An early morning with mist and a coloured sky gives the best atmosphere on the heather.
  • A person or animal for scale: a walker, photographer or grazing sheep in the frame add depth and a sense of distance, handy on a day without special light.
  • Scout in advance, pack extra: visit a location once outside peak time to find a good spot and parking. Bring extra batteries and memory cards, a session tends to run longer than planned.
  • Block time in advance: reserve a few mornings in your calendar during bloom season (roughly early August to mid-September), so you are not planning after the chance has passed.
  • Practise techniques beforehand: macro photography, HDR, panorama and focus stacking work better if you already have them down before the real moment, not while on location.
  • Know your camera functions: set up a shortcut for aspect ratio in advance (for on-the-spot composition) and practise the interval function for timed sequences.

Heather Bloom Planner: how it works

The heather bloom planner shows at a glance what phase the heather is in right now: not yet started, just beginning, at its peak, fading, or over for the year. Useful because the purple peak only lasts a few weeks, and you don't want to drive out to the Veluwe or the Kalmthout Heath for nothing. Below you'll find a list of heather locations near you.

How the bloom phase is determined

The tool works with five phases: waiting, just started, peak, fading and over. Each phase corresponds to an indicative period in the season, with the peak usually falling somewhere between mid-August and early September. That's an average: heat, drought or a cold spell can shift bloom by a week or two in either direction, so treat the date as a guideline, not a promise.

Check a recent photo of the location on social media, or call the local tourist office, before you head out, if you want to be sure how the heather actually looks this year. The planner tells you when to pay attention, not that the heather is definitely in bloom.

The best time of day for heather photos

Heather photographs best in low, side light: the Golden Hour shortly after sunrise or just before sunset. At that point the flower heads pick up a glow and cast just enough shadow to give the field texture. In the middle of the day, with the sun overhead, the purple flattens out fast.

Combine the bloom phase with one of the spots from Photo locations Netherlands & Belgium, and you know exactly when and where to be. Go on a weekday if you can: popular heathland like the Posbank draws big crowds during peak bloom weekends.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the heather stay at its best?

In this tool's indicative timeline, the peak phase lasts roughly three to four weeks, from mid-August to early September. Hot, dry weather can shorten that a little.

Is the bloom phase updated automatically?

Yes, the phase is set automatically based on today's date, following an indicative timeline. In exceptional weather, Michiel can adjust it manually so the planner keeps matching what's happening in the field.

Where do the heather locations in the list come from?

From this site's photo location database, filtered for the 'heather' tag. Missing a good spot? Let us know via the contact form and we'll add it.
