Raised above the heather

In the Nationaal Park Hoge Kempen, close to Maasmechelen, a cycle path runs that literally rises above the heather. Wooden planks, a narrow line, and on both sides purple bloom as far as you can see. In August, when the common heather is at its best, this is one of the most photogenic spots in the Belgian Kempen.

What makes it so strong: the path gives you a slightly elevated viewpoint, yet you are still right in the middle of the landscape. You are not looking down from above, you are looking straight through it. That combination of a clear line leading into the frame, with soft purple on either side, works exceptionally well as a compositional element.

Light and timing

Early morning light is worth its weight in gold here. The low sun catches the heather plants from the side and gives the purple tones extra depth. Mist is not uncommon in August, and if you are lucky a thin layer will hang over the field in the morning. Things fill up quickly on social media after that, but by then you will already have your shots.

Sunset works well too, although the light towards the west tends to be flatter at this spot. Overcast skies with occasional sun is, honestly, my favourite: diffused light without harsh shadows, but still some life in the sky.

Practical: focal length and viewpoint

With a telephoto lens, say 70-200mm or a prime 135mm, you can make the path converge while the heather appears closer. A wide angle works too, but then you need to get close to the surface, which means literally on your knees on the wooden planks. That draws attention from passers-by, but it gives a striking low perspective.

Be mindful of other cyclists and walkers. The path is popular, with non-photographers too. Early in the morning on a weekday it is quietest. You can park at various entry points of the national park, including the one at Maasmechelen. Check in advance which gate is closest, as the park is large and the distances add up quickly.

Heather bloom: when exactly

The bloom runs from late July to mid-September, peaking around the beginning of August. This varies from year to year. The Toerisme Limburg website sometimes provides up-to-date information on the bloom. You can also simply keep an eye on the park's webcams and social feeds if you are planning a specific weekend.
