Heathland on the border of two provinces

Mookerheide sits on the border of Limburg and Gelderland, just south of Mook. What makes this place interesting for photographers is the combination of open heathland, mixed forest and the proximity of the Maas river landscape. That variety produces quite different images within a relatively small area. You walk from purple heather to a forest tunnel to a view over the lower-lying land. Those kinds of transitions are photographically rewarding because you are not tied to one type of light or one type of image.

Heather bloom and autumn colours

August is the moment for the bloom. The heather turns deep purple, and in the early morning light there is often mist in the valleys towards the Maas. That mist effect is invaluable for landscape photography. Come early, ideally half an hour before sunrise. The light changes quickly and you have only a short window. A tele or medium telephoto zoom around 70-200mm works well for compressing the layers in the landscape. If you want to put the heather itself centre stage, a wide-angle lens at a low viewpoint gives good results.

In autumn the focus shifts to the forest. The beech avenues and mixed woodland turn orange and red. October and early November are the best time for that. Diffuse light after an overcast morning works better than direct sunlight, because it avoids hard shadows in the tree canopies.

Macro on the heath

The heathland also lends itself well to macro photography. Heather flowers, dew-covered spiderwebs, lichens on old tree stumps. Get down on your knees and look for the small world at ground level. Early in the morning, while the dew is still there, is the best moment. A macro lens or extension tube around 90-105mm gives you enough working distance to stay out of your own light.

Practical

There are several parking options along the N271 near Mook. The area is freely accessible and there are footpaths throughout. Mookerheide is part of Nationaal Landschap Gelderse Poort and falls partly under the management of Staatsbosbeheer. Stick to the paths during the breeding season in spring. For permits for commercial photo shoots, contact Staatsbosbeheer district Limburg.
