Why Posbank is such a special place for landscape photography

Posbank is one of the few places in the Netherlands where you genuinely feel the landscape breathe. The rolling hills of the Veluwezoom, covered in heather and crossed by forest paths, offer compositions you rarely find elsewhere in the country. No flat polders here, but depth and elevation. That makes a real difference to how you build an image.

The well-known viewpoint by the tea house looks out wide over the IJssel valley towards the Achterhoek. On clear days you can see a long way. But it is the crepuscular rays, shafts of light falling through gaps in the clouds, that bring people out here specifically. They appear most often in autumn, when the sky is more unsettled and the sun sits lower.

Best moments and seasons

August is the month of the heather bloom. The purple carpet draws plenty of visitors, but also the finest images. Come early, because by around nine in the morning the car park on the Zijpenbergweg is already full at weekends. The golden hour begins here around sunrise, when mist still hangs in the valleys and the light skims low across the heather. That is the moment.

October and November are perhaps even better for atmospheric shots. The beeches turn colour, the morning mist lifts slowly and you more often have the place to yourself. A misty autumn morning gives you layers in the landscape, something that disappears entirely in flat light.

Composition and focal length

A wide angle of 16 to 24mm works well for the heather plains and the sky above them. If you want to compress the IJssel valley and bring the distant horizon closer, reach for a 70 to 135mm. Look for a foreground: a clump of heather, a path, a boulder. Without an anchor, the view loses its power.

Most of the strongest images come not from the viewpoint itself, but a few hundred metres further along the heather paths. Walk up the hill towards the masts or follow the path heading north. Fewer people, more quiet, better angles.

Practical

You can park in the large car park on the Zijpenbergweg in Rheden, managed by Staatsbosbeheer. In summer and during the heather bloom a parking fee applies. No permit is required for photography without a commercial purpose. The area is freely accessible, but stick to the paths during the breeding season.
