Urk: a village that feels like somewhere else

Urk feels different from the rest of the Netherlands. It is a former island that only became connected to the mainland in 1939, when the Noordoostpolder was drained. That isolation has left its mark. In the narrow streets around the harbour you sense a community that has kept its own rhythm. For street photography, that is invaluable.

The harbour is the beating heart. Fishing vessels are sometimes moored close together, nets hang out to dry, men work on deck. You do not have to wait long for an interesting moment. Early in the morning it is quiet and the light is soft. Later in the day tourists arrive, but along the quaysides and in the side streets you quickly find your own corner.

The lighthouse and the water

The lighthouse of Urk stands on a projecting rock at the edge of the village. White, simple, with the IJsselmeer behind it. At sunrise the water turns yellow and orange, and the silhouettes of the boats stand out sharply. A telephoto focal length of 135mm or longer works well here to build up layers, boat after boat, with the lighthouse as an anchor point in the background. Wide angle works too, with the sky as the main subject.

The IJsselmeer is unpredictable. Wind turns the water grey and choppy. Calm weather gives mirror reflections. Overcast days are underrated: the diffuse light gives the weathered wooden facades and colourful boats an even, rich tone without harsh shadows.

Portrait and street photography in the village

Urk has a strong community identity. On Sundays the village is almost entirely closed and many residents attend church. That creates unusual street scenes, but always ask permission before photographing people up close. The people here appreciate it, and you will often get a better portrait in return.

Parking can be difficult in the centre during high season. Car parks are available on the edge of the village from where you can reach everything easily on foot. The walking route sign at the harbour guides you through the oldest parts of the village, past listed buildings and viewpoints over the water.

Season and light

Urk works all year round. In winter it is deserted and raw, with low sun throwing long shadows across the quay. Summer brings crowds but also brightly coloured boats and clear skies. The golden hour lasts a long time here in summer. Come early, and stay a little after sunset. The blue hour gives the harbour a completely different, quieter character.
