Straight lines and vivid colour

The tulip fields around Creil and Espel, in the Noordoostpolder just north of Emmeloord, are one of the most photographically striking places in the Netherlands every spring. This is polder in its purest form: flat, wide and open, with strips of red, yellow, pink and purple running all the way to the horizon. No hill, no tree to break the view. Just line after line.

What sets this place apart from the Bollenstreek is the scale and the quiet. Tourist crowds are less of a given here, although the location is becoming better known. The straight polder roads and ruler-flat ditches create compositions that feel almost graphic. A wide or mid-telephoto focal length, somewhere between 24mm and 85mm, works well for showing that depth and repetition. With a longer telephoto, say 200mm or more, you compress the strips and the result becomes almost abstract.

Light and timing

Mid-April to early May is the window. Exactly when depends on the year and the variety the grower has planted. During that period, feel free to drive out a few times, because the flowering of each plot varies. The golden hour early in the morning is the best moment: the light catches the flowers from the side, the shadows are long, and there is almost no one around. Later in the day the light is high and flat. Overcast weather works surprisingly well for colour contrast, because colours look deeper and more saturated without hard shadows.

Drone and perspective

The Noordoostpolder is popular for drone photography, and that is understandable. From the air, the patterns of the rows become truly visible. Bear the rules in mind: you are flying over agricultural land, but always check the current airspace restrictions via the official map of the Rijksdienst voor het Wegverkeer. Ask permission if you are unsure, and never land on a field itself.

Practical

Park along the unpaved polder roads, but never block an entrance or a passage for farm vehicles. The growers are not an attraction and the fields are their workplace. Do not enter the plots, not even for a quick shot. Damage to the flowers affects their certification as propagation material. Stick to the road and you will find more than enough angles.
