Colour on the island

Goeree-Overflakkee is not the Bollenstreek. That is precisely what makes it worth the trip. The tulip fields here are scattered among polders, dykes and open water. No coachloads of tourists, no polished agricultural spectacle. Just large stretches of colour in a wide-open landscape, with a cloudy sky and the sea not far off.

The fields are found mainly in the west and north of the island, around places like Ouddorp and Dirksland. Their exact locations shift from year to year, because bulb growers rotate their crops. Your best bet is to drive around and see what you find, or explore the polder routes by bicycle. The latter works better: you can stop quickly, there is no parking to worry about, and you move at eye level with the land.

Light and timing

Mid-April is a safe bet. Early May can still be good, but by then the heads come off quickly. Morning light works best: soft shadows across the rows, the colour warm but not overexposed. On overcast days the colour looks more saturated, without the harsh contrasts you get in midday sun. Think beyond the flowers themselves. The dyke embankments in the background, a windmill in the distance, or the water of the Grevelingen acting as a mirror, these are the elements that make a photo on this island different from a standard bulb field.

Composition and focal length

A telephoto lens, somewhere between 70mm and 200mm, lets you compress the rows and emphasise the repetition of colour. A wide-angle of 24mm or 35mm works well when you want to include the sky and the horizon. Pay attention to leading lines: the rows often run straight away from you, and if you get down low, you push that sense of depth even further. Pick a point at the end of the row, a tree, a gate, something that gives the eye somewhere to go.

Practical

Stay on the paths and the road. The fields are working farmland. Do not step in for a photo, however tempting. There are no official photo locations or viewpoints designated for the tulip fields, but the dykes around the Grevelingen sometimes offer a slightly higher vantage point. The region is accessible by car via the N57 or the Haringvlietbrug. Parking along narrow polder roads is generally possible, but keep the way clear.
