A yellow bridge cutting through the city
The Luchtsingel in Rotterdam is hard to miss. The bright yellow wooden walkway winds about twelve metres above the city centre, from the Hofplein towards the Pompenburg and on to the Werkplaatskwartier. That height, combined with the warm yellow of the timber, is what makes this one of the most photographed spots in Rotterdam.
What makes this bridge unusual is that it was built through crowdfunding. Residents and businesses literally bought a plank. Many of those planks carry a name or a message. Zoom in close and you realise the bridge is a little more than just an architectural statement.
Light and composition
During the day, backlight works well here. Position yourself at the start of the bridge with the sun behind your subject, and you get a strong silhouette effect as people walk across. The yellow timber reflects warm light, even on overcast days. That makes the Luchtsingel usable throughout the year, in every season.
For architectural shots, a wide-angle lens around 16 to 24mm works best. You can capture the tension between the bridge and the buildings around it in a single frame. If you want to make street photos, a 50mm or 85mm suits better. Step back and give people room within the frame.
Pay attention to what is happening beneath the bridge too. The urban fabric below, with cranes, facades and roads, creates a layered image. From street level, with the bridge rising diagonally above you, there are strong lines to be made.
Practical
The Luchtsingel is freely accessible, and no permit is needed for photography without a commercial purpose. Parking is easiest in one of the car parks in the centre. The bridge is within walking distance of Rotterdam Centraal. It gets busy during the day at weekends. Early in the morning, or on a weekday, you will have more space and fewer passers-by in your frame if that is what you prefer.
