An island that breathes
Tiengemeten lies in the Haringvliet, just south of Nieuwendijk. It is one of the few places in the Netherlands where you genuinely feel that nature is doing things on its own terms. No holiday parks, no theme-park infrastructure. Just reed marshes, open polders, and a ferry that drops you on an island quietly recovering itself.
Since the early 1990s, Tiengemeten has been gradually handed back to nature. Farmhouses have been demolished, small dykes removed, and the reeds have taken over. Highland cattle roam freely here and keep the landscape open. That is what makes this island special for photographers: it is rough, unpolished, and varied within a relatively small area.
What the light does here
Morning is the strongest time. Take the first ferry if you can, because that is when mist sits over the reeds and the light hangs low across the polders. Backlight works well here, particularly in the reeds and around the Highland cattle. The long hair of those animals glows when the sun is low. In autumn the reeds turn golden yellow and reddish brown, and the skies above the Haringvliet can be enormously dramatic.
Midday light is flat and hard. Overcast days are fine for close-up details of plants or animals, but for landscapes you want that low sun.
Compositions and focal lengths
For landscapes I prefer a slightly longer focal length, around 70 to 135mm. That compresses the reed landscape nicely and brings sky and water closer together. For the Highland cattle, 200 to 400mm is more comfortable: you keep your distance, the animals stay calm, and you get better backgrounds.
The dyke paths give you views across the open water towards the Haringvliet. Those are strong spots at sunrise. The island also has small beaches on the northern side, with driftwood and tide marks. Small details that tell the story of the island.
Practical
You reach Tiengemeten by ferry from Nieuwendijk. The ferry does not run all year and has limited timetables, so always check in advance. There are no shops or restaurants on the island. Bring enough food and water. The land is managed by Natuurmonumenten and is freely accessible via the marked paths. Dogs are not permitted.
