A garden with character
Arboretum Trompenburg in Rotterdam is no ordinary park. It is a private botanical garden with more than 3,000 species of trees, shrubs and perennials, including many rare specimens you rarely encounter in regular parks. That makes it a particularly interesting location for macro and plant photography. Here you find not just greenery, but texture, colour and form in all kinds of variations.
Why this place works for photography
The strength of Trompenburg lies in its diversity. Alongside the usual seasonal plants, there are unusual species with striking leaf structures, berries, bark and flower heads that you rarely come across elsewhere. This opens up possibilities for detail shots that go beyond the clichéd flower photograph. Think of the textured bark of a Zelkova, the autumn colour of a Liquidambar, or the finely branched pattern of a breaking bud in early spring.
For macro work, a focal length of 90mm or 105mm is comfortable. It keeps some distance between you and the subject, which makes it easier to settle on composition and depth of field without rushing. A tripod is welcome here, because in low wind and low light you do not want to rely on hand-held sharpness.
Light and season
Spring and autumn are the strongest periods. In spring the first shoots, blossoms and young leaves appear, with a freshness that disappears over summer. In autumn the leaves turn orange, red and yellow, and there are opportunities for detail shots using backlight. Overcast weather often works better than direct sun, as it removes hard shadows from your subject.
Early in the morning it is quiet and the light sits low. That gives more depth to your shots than the flat light of midday.

The garden is located at Honingerdijk 86 in Rotterdam-Kralingen. Street parking nearby is limited. The garden is accessible on fixed opening days and a modest entrance fee applies. Visit the official website for current times and prices. Photography for personal use is permitted, but for commercial assignments it is wise to contact the arboretum in advance.
