A coast that breathes

Between Camperduin and Petten lies one of the most open stretches of coastline in Noord-Holland. There are no rows of beach pavilions in the way. You look out over a wide, engineered sandy beach that gives way to young dunes, and just behind those dunes sits the Hondsbossche Duinmeer. That combination, water on both sides of a narrow dune area, gives you as a photographer a lot to work with.

The coast here was raised relatively recently as part of the Hondsbossche en Pettemer Zeewering. That gives the landscape a bare, almost sculptural quality. Little development, little distraction. Which is precisely why the light falls so hard here.

Light and season

The golden hour in autumn is at its best here. The sun sits low, the shadow lines in the sand stretch long, and the rugged dune landscape takes on a warm glow that is absent in summer. When clouds roll in or a shower approaches, the sky can change quickly. That dynamism is worth waiting for.

The wind is almost always present here. That works in your favour if you want to capture movement: swaying marram grass, blowing sand, wave crests. Use a slightly faster shutter speed if you want to freeze it, or go for longer exposures in the evening dusk.

Composition and focal length

A wide angle of 16 to 24mm lets you take in the expanse of beach and sky together. A telephoto of 70mm or longer works well for bringing the texture of the sand or the breaking waves closer. The dune lake to the east offers calm water, reflections when the wind drops, and a different perspective from the beach itself.

Walk up from the beach over the dike for a wide overview. That height gives you a hard horizon and plenty of sky. Then drop back down to the beach for a lower angle with the dunes as a frame.

Practical

You park at the beach access point in Camperduin, at the end of the Voorstraat. From there it is a short walk to the beach and the dune crossings. The area is freely accessible, but stay on the paths through the young dunes. They are sensitive and clearly marked. In high season the beach is busier at weekends. In autumn you often have it to yourself.
