A market that photographs itself
The Albert Cuypmarkt is one of the busiest markets in the Netherlands. Every day from Monday to Saturday, around 300 stalls line the Albert Cuypstraat in de Pijp. Cheese, fish, textiles, stroopwafels, vegetables. It is noisy, colourful and constantly in motion. For street photography, that is gold.
What makes this place special is the mix of people. You see tourists alongside regulars, market traders negotiating with customers, children tugging at a herring roll. There is always something to see. You do not have to wait long for a moment.
Light and composition
The street runs roughly from west to east. Early in the morning, when the market is just setting up, the light is low and comes in from the side. That gives you beautiful shadows across the stalls and on the faces of the vendors. Later in the day the light flattens out, but by then the market is fuller and more is happening.
I like shooting here with a 35mm or 50mm equivalent. Wide enough to include the surroundings, but not so wide that you have to stand too far from your subject. At the edges of the market you can layer people and stalls nicely. Look for a raised vantage point if you want to capture the bustle from above, a step or a higher kerb already makes a real difference.
Practical
The market is at its busiest on Friday and Saturday mornings. If you prefer to work more quietly, go on a weekday morning. Parking nearby is difficult and expensive. Take the tram or cycle. The nearest tram stop is Ferdinand Bolstraat, lines 16 and 24 stop close by.
Photography on a public market is permitted without a permit, as long as you are not filming or photographing commercially with professional studio equipment. If in doubt, ask a stallholder. Most people respond well when you are open about what you are doing.
The market is photogenic all year round, but in autumn and winter you get warmer artificial light from the stalls when it is overcast. In summer the light is harsher, but the terraces are full and the energy is high.
