Hindeloopen: a village that takes its time

Hindeloopen is one of the smallest towns along the IJsselmeer, and that is exactly what makes it special. No busy shopping streets, no tourist noise. What you do find: narrow cobbled lanes, wooden footbridges, a harbour that looks as though time has paused there. This is one of those places where you simply start walking, and the images come to you.

Light and season

Autumn is by far the best time to be here. The tourists have gone, the sky above the IJsselmeer becomes more dramatic, and the warmer tones of trees and facades strengthen the atmospheric, slightly melancholic character of the village. Golden hour works particularly well on the western side towards the water. The light falls low across the harbour and colours everything a soft orange. Early in the morning, when mist still hangs over the canals, you have the streets almost entirely to yourself.

Compositions and focal lengths

For street photography and architecture here, I prefer a slightly longer focal length, around 50mm or 85mm. The lanes are narrow, and too wide a field of view pulls in too much cluttered background. Look for lines: the wooden bridges over the canals, the facades that meet at a corner, the mast of a boat continuing up into a cloudy sky. The harbour itself also lends itself to wider shots, especially when boats are moored and the water mirrors the sky.

Practical

Parking is easiest on the edge of the village, where there are a few small car parks near the access roads. Hindeloopen is a cycling distance from Workum, so you can combine both locations in a single day. The village is small, and an hour on foot is enough to see everything. But take your time. If you rush, you will miss the best corners.
