What you'll find here
The Westhoek dune area near De Panne is the largest unbroken stretch of dunes on the Belgian coast. That might sound unremarkable, but in practice it means a varied landscape of tall shifting dunes, dry flats, dense dune scrub and open views towards the sea. There is little development in sight, and if you head in the right direction, you'll find spots that feel almost deserted. Even on a weekday afternoon in high season, you can walk for ten minutes and not see another person.
Light and season
The golden hour works very well here, particularly in the evening. The low sunlight catches the tops of the dunes and sharply defines the gentle roll of the sand. The shadows that fall at that time give structure to what looks rather flat during the day. In autumn, from September to November, the light is softer and lower throughout the day. The vegetation takes on brown and ochre tones that suit the dune landscape well. The chance of mist is greater too, which adds atmosphere to the open space.
Compositions and focal lengths
For wide overviews of the dune landscape I use a wide-angle lens, something around the 24 or 28mm equivalent. The depth of the terrain calls for a strong foreground subject: a post, a winding path, a clump of marram grass. Without that anchor, the eye gets lost. For the transition between dune ridges and sky, or for details in the dune vegetation, I prefer a slightly longer focal length, around 85 or 100mm. That compresses the layers in the landscape in a way that brings out the atmosphere.
Practical
The easiest place to park is on the Dynastielaan in De Panne, right next to the entrance to the reserve. Westhoek is a recognised nature reserve, managed by the Agentschap voor Natuur en Bos. You are free to walk on the marked paths. Flying drones is not permitted without an exemption. Arriving early is worth it: before sunrise there is barely anyone around and the light is at its best.
