A fortress that seems almost too good to be true

Heusden is one of the best-preserved fortified towns in the Netherlands. The ramparts, the canals, the harbour and the two post mills still stand exactly as they were intended centuries ago. As a street photographer I usually go looking for the unexpected, but here you already know before you arrive that it will deliver. And it still manages to surprise you.

The Vismarkt is the beating heart of the fortress. Surrounded by historic facades, with a view of the inner harbour and the mills on the rampart behind it, you have a composition that offers itself up. That is both an advantage and a trap. The postcard shot is easy to get. Take your time and walk around it.

Light and season

The blue hour works beautifully here. The water in the harbour reflects the sky, the lanterns come on, and the facades glow warm yellow. That contrast is exactly what you are after. Arrive shortly before sunset so you catch the transition from daylight to artificial light. In winter the sky is more often dramatically overcast and fewer people are around, which benefits the architecture and atmosphere.

In summer it gets busy, especially on Saturdays. That gives you more life on the streets, but also full terraces that can sometimes distract from a composition. Heading out early solves that.

Compositions and focal lengths

For wide shots of the harbour with the mills, a 24mm to 35mm lens works well. It gives you room for the sky and the water. For facades and details, move to 50mm or 85mm, especially if you want to isolate the characteristic stepped gables.

Walk the ramparts too. From up there you look down onto the harbour and the Vismarkt, and that gives you a completely different perspective from what you get at street level. The post mills are also photogenic up close, particularly when there is wind and the sails are turning.

Practical

Parking is outside the fortress, in the car parks at the edge. Driving inside is restricted. The fortress is freely accessible all year round. No permits are needed for non-commercial photography. Allow around twenty to thirty minutes to explore the centre properly.
