The smallest inhabited Wadden island

Schiermonnikoog is the smallest inhabited Wadden island in the Netherlands, and perhaps the quietest. Hardly any cars. That gives the place a completely different atmosphere from the other islands. You walk, you cycle, and suddenly you find yourself in a landscape that is in no hurry.

For landscape and nature photography, that is a real advantage. No traffic in the background, no parked vans in your composition. Just wind, light and space.

Beaches, salt marshes and emptiness

The beach on the northern side is wide. Sometimes wider than you expect. At low tide the sand stretches far back and you get mirror-like patches along the waterline. That works well with a wide-angle lens, especially when there is cloud cover. Look for textures in the sand, driftwood washed ashore, or footprints trailing off towards the horizon.

The salt marshes on the southern side are a different story. Salt-marsh grass grows there in patterns that photograph beautifully from a low viewpoint. A focal length of around 70 to 200mm helps to emphasise the repetition in the vegetation. In autumn the grass turns reddish-brown. That is when Schiermonnikoog really comes into its own.

Light and season

The golden hour here is long and generous. The horizon is low, the sky takes up a lot of space. Both at sunrise and sunset the light falls at a low angle across the land. Shadows grow long, colours turn warm.

Autumn is the best period. The summer crowds are gone, the light sits lower in the sky and the landscape has more colour. Stormy days produce dramatic skies. A grey filter (ND) is useful if you want to drag moving clouds across the salt marshes in a long exposure.

Practical

You travel by ferry from Lauwersoog. The crossing takes about 45 minutes. There is one village. Bicycles are available to hire on the island. Many photo locations are easy to reach by bike, but for the salt marshes and the more distant stretches of beach you will be walking a fair distance. Plan to get up early if you want to catch the sunrise, as the village is not right next to the beach.

Schiermonnikoog is a national park. Stay on the paths outside designated areas, especially during the breeding season. That is not only required, it is simply the right thing to do.
