Frahan in the bend of the Semois
From Rochehaut you look down on one of the most beautiful river loops in the Ardennes. The village of Frahan lies almost entirely surrounded by the Semois, on a narrow tongue of land the river has carved out. You stand roughly 100 metres above the valley, and the view gives you an immediate, perfect example of what a meandering river landscape looks like. That is exactly what makes this spot so appealing to landscape photographers.
Light and season
The spot works best in autumn. The forests around Frahan turn amber, red and yellow, and that contrast with the dark river water is precisely what you are looking for. Come early. Morning mist regularly drifts through the valley, and when that mist stays low and the treetops rise above the white, you have an image you will rarely find anywhere else. The golden hour in the morning casts soft side light across the hillsides. By midday the sun is too high and the light flattens out. Returning at sunset is sometimes worthwhile, but the orientation of the viewpoint favours morning light.
Composition and focal length
Wide works very well here. A focal length around 24mm or 35mm lets you capture the full loop in frame, including the surrounding hills. But a longer focal length, 70mm to 135mm, allows you to isolate Frahan itself and bring the village church forward more clearly. Try both. The foreground at the viewpoint is minimal, so your composition stands or falls on the loop and the light. A tripod is not a luxury on misty morning sessions.
Practical
Rochehaut is a small village in the municipality of Bouillon. There is a car park close to the well-known viewpoint, and you can walk there in under five minutes. In summer it is busy, especially at weekends. In October and November there is more peace and the landscape is at its finest. There are no access restrictions or permits required. The viewpoint is freely accessible. The nearest larger village for fuel or coffee is Bouillon, about a quarter of an hour's drive away.
