Forest full of texture and detail

The Kaapse Bossen lie on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, just outside Doorn. It is a varied woodland of deciduous trees, conifers and open clearings, spread across the gentle slopes of the ridge. That variety makes it interesting for both macro and landscape photography. You do not need a grand subject. Sometimes a patch of moss on a fallen trunk is enough.

Autumn is the season to go

In September and October, fungi draw the eye. Fly agarics, chanterelles, silky rosegills, sometimes dozens of them together, just off the edge of the path if you are not paying attention. The autumn colour does the rest. Light filters through the trees differently then, softer and more angled, especially in the morning. I prefer to go just after sunrise, when the dew is still there and almost no one else is around.

Macro photography: close to the ground

There is plenty here for macro work. A focal length between 90mm and 105mm works well for fungi, giving you enough distance while still letting the background blur nicely. Bring a kneeling mat, because you will end up flat on the forest floor before long. Diffuse light works better than direct sun, which makes shadows too harsh and causes detail to disappear. Overcast mornings are your friend here.

Landscape: looking for height and depth

The ridge gives you something a flat forest cannot: a sense of depth. Look for paths that gently climb or descend and use the tree trunks as leading lines. A focal length around 35mm or 50mm works well for this. Wide enough for context, but not so wide that the space feels empty.

Practical

You can park at the Kapelaansdijk or approach via the Amersfoortseweg towards Doorn. The area is managed by Utrechts Landschap. Paths are freely accessible. Stay on the marked routes, especially when photographing close to fungi. Bear in mind that weekends in autumn can be busy, dog walkers included. On weekdays you will have more peace and a better chance of finding the fungi undisturbed.
