What makes Het Zwin special for photographers

Het Zwin is a tidal area on the border of Belgium and the Netherlands, just outside Knokke-Heist. Mudflats, salt marshes, creeks and open water alternate throughout the landscape. For wildlife and landscape photography that is an appealing combination: you have both space and structure in the frame. Light plays a big role here. The openness of the area means there is nothing between you and the horizon, and that works in your favour at sunrise and sunset.

Birds as the main subject

Het Zwin is internationally recognised as a bird area. During the autumn migration, from August to October, and in spring, from March to May, large numbers of waders, ducks and geese pass through. Avocets, oystercatchers, black-tailed godwits and spoonbills are not uncommon. A telephoto lens of 400mm or longer serves you well, though you quickly learn that patience pays off more than the longest lens you own. Go early, before the crowds arrive. The area is quieter in the morning and the light is softer.

Compositions in the landscape

Beyond birds, Het Zwin also offers strong landscape material. The salt marsh vegetation turns grey-green in summer and reddish-brown in autumn. That gives deep, warm colours that work well combined with a low sky. Creeks running across the flat terrain form a natural leading line. A wide-angle or a standard zoom between 24mm and 70mm works very comfortably here. Shooting low to the ground adds depth and context.

Practical

Het Zwin Natuur Park has a visitor centre with a car park on the Graaf Leon Lippensdreef in Knokke-Heist. There is an entrance fee for the park itself. Outside official opening hours the outer area is partly accessible via the sea dyke, but do not enter the park on your own outside opening times. Ask at the visitor centre about the current bird situation if you are specifically looking for certain species. Some zones are closed during the breeding season, so check that in advance on the park's website.
