What you find in the caves

The Grotten van Han are among the most spectacular underground locations in Europe. You walk through enormous chambers filled with stalactite formations millions of years old, past underground rivers and through narrow passages that suddenly open up into high domes. The lighting is entirely artificial, as there is no daylight down here. That makes the place technically challenging, but also unique. You work with what is there, and that forces you to think creatively about lighting and composition.

Light and technique

The caves are lit with fixed spotlights and coloured lighting. Those colours are sometimes warm orange, sometimes a bluish white. If you prefer neutral colours, set the white balance manually. If you want to preserve the atmosphere as it has been designed, let the automatic white balance do its work. Both choices can work, depending on what you want to convey.

A tripod is essential here. Light levels are low, ISO 800 to 3200 is not unusual, and you will often want as much depth of field as possible. A wide-angle lens works well in the large chambers to show the scale, but an 85mm or 50mm gives you nice close-ups of individual stalactite formations. Pay attention to the reflections on the water in the underground river: they can strengthen your composition in unexpected ways.

Practical

The caves are only accessible via a guided tour. You have no freedom when it comes to pace and positioning. Ask in advance whether tripods are permitted during your specific tour, as this varies by group and time slot. Tours depart several times a day. The visitor centre and tickets can be arranged through the official website of the caves.

The caves are comfortable to visit all year round: the temperature stays constant at around 13 degrees. Bring a jacket, even in summer. The crowds outside, in the village of Han-sur-Lesse, vary by season, but inside the caves you barely notice that. Early tours tend to have slightly smaller groups.

How to get there

Han-sur-Lesse is in the province of Namen, not far from the border with Luxembourg. You can park in the village itself. From there you walk to the departure point of the tour. The coordinates for navigation are 50.123, 5.190. Allow half a day to a full day if you want to combine the caves with the wildlife park in the surrounding area.
