A medieval church full of books

Boekhandel Dominicanen in Maastricht is housed in a thirteenth-century Gothic church. That sounds spectacular, and it is. Tall vaulted ceilings, ancient pillars, stained-glass windows, and in between them a modern bookshelf structure that reaches high into the air. The combination of old stone and contemporary interior makes this one of the most photographed indoor spaces in the Netherlands.

The church is on the Dominicanerkerkstraat, just off the Markt in the centre of Maastricht. The easiest way to park is in one of the nearby car parks, as getting close by car is tricky. The bookshop is simply a shop, so there is no entry fee. During busy periods you will notice it is a popular day-trip destination. Early in the morning, just after opening, it is quieter.

Light and timing

The light inside is diffuse and fairly consistent throughout the day. The stained-glass windows sometimes cast a warm colour on the stone walls, but do not expect dramatic shafts of light as you might find outdoors. You are almost always working with available indoor light here, which means a lens with a wide aperture is useful. Think f/1.8 or f/2.8, possibly combined with ISO 1600 or higher. A tripod is generally not permitted in a public shop, so keep your ISO high and your stance steady.

Composition and focal points

The space calls for a wide-angle lens for overview shots. A 16 to 24mm on full frame shows the full height and captures the relationship between old and new. Pay attention to the leading lines of the pillars and the bookshelves. They draw the eye upward, and that is where much of this interior's power lies. For details, a 50mm or 85mm works well for the ornaments in the vaulting or the interior furnishings up close. Do not overlook the floor either: the old tiles and their pattern add context to the space.

Practical information

The bookshop keeps regular retail hours and is open all year. Photography for personal use is permitted, but always ask for permission before shooting commercially. The location is easy to reach by bus or on foot from the centre of Maastricht.
