A bridge with history
The John Frostbrug in Arnhem is no ordinary city bridge. In September 1944, British paratroopers fought here for days to hold a bridgehead during Operation Market Garden. That history still clings to the place, and you feel it when you stand there with your camera. The bridge spans the Rhine where the river is wide and the sky has room to breathe. That makes this a remarkable location, even if you set the history aside and simply look at what's in front of you.
Why the bridge is photogenic
The bridge has a recognisable steel structure with clear, strong lines. That structure lends itself well to architectural photography, but also to long-exposure shots where you either freeze or smooth out the movement of the water or traffic. The Rijnkade on the city side gives you room to step back and frame the bridge as a whole. On the far side, towards Nijmegen, you have a different vantage point that places the bridge against the Arnhem city skyline.
Blue hour works best here
I prefer to come here during blue hour, just after sunset. The bridge is lit up, the water reflects, and the sky takes on that deep blue-purple tone that pulls everything together. A tripod is not a luxury here, it is simply necessary. Allow for shutter speeds between one and ten seconds to get the water silky smooth. A wide-angle or standard zoom around 24-50mm gives you enough flexibility to move between details of the structure and the wider scene with the river.
Practical information
You can park near the Rijnkade, but check the parking rules as most of Arnhem city centre has paid parking. The bridge itself is publicly accessible and no permit is needed for non-commercial photography. At busy times, such as summer evenings, people walk across the bridge and may disrupt your composition, or add to it if you choose to include them deliberately. In winter the embankment is quieter and blue hour arrives earlier in the evening.
