An interior almost too beautiful to be real
The Stadsfeestzaal on the Meir in Antwerpen is one of the most richly decorated interiors in Belgium. What was once a grand hall is now a shopping arcade, but the ceiling, the galleries and the golden details make you forget that quickly. You step inside and your gaze goes straight up. That is exactly the feeling you want to hold onto in your photographs.
The building dates from 1908 and was fully restored after a serious fire in 2000. The restoration was done thoroughly. The gilded ornaments, the glass dome and the eclectic architecture have all come back in full glory. For an architectural photographer, this is one of the easiest places to make impressive images, precisely because the building offers so much detail at every level.
Light and composition
Daylight falls through the glass dome and gives the interior a soft, diffused glow. On bright days you get better light than on overcast ones, but even in grey weather the artificial light combined with the gilding works well. Early in the morning, just after opening, it is quieter. That gives you the space to make symmetrical compositions without shoppers walking through your frame.
A wide angle between 16mm and 24mm works well if you want to capture the full height. If you want to isolate details in the plasterwork or the gilded capitals, an 85mm or a short telephoto will serve you better. Pay attention to straight lines: the galleries run strictly symmetrically and that calls for a well-aligned camera. A small tilt becomes visible quickly in this kind of architecture.
Practical
The Stadsfeestzaal is publicly accessible as a shopping arcade and you do not need a permit for personal or editorial use. Commercial shoots are a different matter, for those you contact the management. The easiest parking is in one of the underground car parks on the Meir, such as Parking Stadsfeestzaal directly beneath the building. Crowds peak on Saturday afternoons. On weekdays, certainly before ten in the morning, you will have the arcade almost to yourself.
