Social Media Image: how it works
The Social Media Image tool generates export files in the exact dimensions that Instagram, LinkedIn and other platforms require. Use it whenever you want to post a photo without the platform cropping it or degrading quality because of wrong aspect ratios. No manual preset juggling in Lightroom or Photoshop.
Why dimensions matter more than most photographers expect
Every platform has its own pixel dimensions and aspect ratios. Instagram displays a square (1080x1080 px) differently from a portrait crop (1080x1350 px), and LinkedIn scales a cover image completely differently from a standard post.
Ignore that, and the platform crops for you, usually right through the part of the frame you actually wanted to show. The tool gives you the correct canvas settings per platform, so you stay in control of what the viewer sees.
Where this fits in your editing workflow
The most practical moment to use this tool is at the end of your editing process, once colour grading and exposure are locked in. You select the target platform, the tool calculates the correct format, and you export straight at the right dimensions.
Posting to several platforms at once? Run a separate export for each destination. Image quality stays intact because the tool works with the maximum resolution each platform actually accepts.
Frequently asked questions
Which format should I use when posting a landscape photo to LinkedIn?
LinkedIn displays landscape images best at 1200x627 px (1.91:1 ratio). Use a different format and the platform either adds white bars or crops the frame automatically.
Can I use one image file for both my Instagram feed and Stories?
Technically yes, but the aspect ratios are too different for a clean result in both places. Feed works at 4:5 (1080x1350 px), Stories at 9:16 (1080x1920 px). Two separate exports is the cleaner approach.
How many pixels wide does my photo need to be for Instagram to look sharp?
1080 px wide is the standard for Instagram feed posts. Upload wider and Instagram compresses it down anyway, so shooting for 1080 px saves you file size without any visible quality loss.
