System for categorising people by skin, hair and eye colour to identify flattering colours for clothing and make-up.
The theory divides people into four seasons, Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter, based on undertone (cool or warm) and contrast (light or deep). A Summer has a cool undertone and low contrast; an Autumn has a warm undertone and earthy tones. For photographers the colour analysis guides the choice of background colours and clothing: a warm Autumn type looks washed out against a cool grey background, while terracotta or ochre yellow makes the skin glow.
