Tools for Macro Photographers
Essential tools for macro photographers: depth of field calculator, flash calculator, ND filter, light modifiers, EXIF viewer and exposure triangle.
Depth of field in macro photography
Macro photography starts and ends with depth of field. At 1:1 on a 100mm lens, the sharp zone at f/8 is barely a millimetre. The depth of field calculator shows exactly how much is sharp for any combination of focal length, aperture and focus distance. Use it to decide whether you can get away with a single shot or whether focus stacking is unavoidable.
Exposure up close
At macro distances, lenses block light differently and shadows behave unexpectedly. The exposure triangle keeps the core relationships clear even at very high aperture values. The light meter gives a quick brightness reference, and the camera settings advisor offers a starting point for each situation.
Flash and artificial light for macro
Artificial light is more the rule than the exception in macro photography. The flash guide number calculator works out the right power at any distance. The light modifiers guide explains which accessories suit small subjects: ring flashes, small softboxes, diffusors and reflectors.
ND filters, focal length and analysis
The ND filter calculator is useful for outdoor macro when you want to extend shutter speed or use a wider aperture in bright conditions. The focal length tool and simulator help you choose between 50mm, 100mm and longer macro lenses. The EXIF viewer helps you learn from every shot, and the black-and-white preview lets you explore whether texture and form carry the image without colour.
