Fill light

A secondary light source that softens or lifts the shadows created by the key light.
Without fill light, shadows are hard and dramatic. A reflector, white wall or second flash at lower power acts as fill. The ratio between key and fill determines the light-shadow ratio: 2:1 is soft and even, 4:1 is dramatic.
