When the light source is behind the subject, facing the camera.
Backlight creates beautiful rim lights and silhouettes, but is tricky to expose. The camera reads too much light and underexposes the face. Use exposure compensation (+1 to +2) or fill flash to light the front. A lens hood is essential to prevent flare.
