Professional retouching works in layers: first remove obvious blemishes with the Healing Brush or Clone Stamp, then even out texture and tone via Frequency Separation or Dodge & Burn. The goal is a natural result that doesn't look "edited". Overly heavy retouching (completely smooth and plastic) is less fashionable today.
