Increasing local contrast along edges to make the photo appear sharper.
Digital sharpening compensates for the soft rendering of sensors and lens design. In Lightroom you work with four sliders: Amount, Radius, Detail, and Masking. Masking is crucial: it prevents flat areas (sky, skin) from being sharpened. Too much sharpening creates halos along high-contrast edges.
