The point in the scene on which the camera focuses.
Thinking about where you focus makes a big difference. For portrait, the nearest eye is a good starting point (Eye AF helps with this). For landscape, one third into the frame can work well for hyperfocal optimisation. Focus lock and recompose gives more compositional freedom, but shifts the focal plane slightly.
