A photo that is too dark because the sensor received too little light.
In the dark areas of an underexposed photo shadow detail is lost. Let in more light via a slower shutter speed, wider aperture, or higher ISO. With RAW files some underexposure can be recovered in post; with JPEG the lost detail is gone.
