Matrix metering / Evaluative metering

Matrixmeting (evaluatiemeting) · Exposure

The default metering mode where the camera analyses the entire scene for an overall correct exposure.

Nikon calls it matrix metering, Canon evaluative metering: both do the same thing. The camera divides the frame into zones, weights them, and calculates an exposure that works for most situations. For tricky light (backlight, white backgrounds) spot metering or exposure compensation works better.
