Lens character

Lenskarakter · Lens & optics

The unique quality and personality of a lens's rendering that influences the mood of photographs.

Two lenses with the same focal length and f-number can feel completely different: one gives soft, creamy bokeh and a warm rendering; the other is cool, analytically sharp. This "character" is determined by the optical design, coating, lens construction, and bokeh shape. Many photographers choose lenses not only on specifications but also on character.
