An attachment on the front of the lens that blocks stray light and prevents lens flare.
A lens hood improves image contrast by preventing unwanted side light from hitting the lens elements. Always use one, even on overcast days. Petal-shaped hoods are designed for the specific aspect ratio of a lens.
