The "warmth" of light, expressed in Kelvin (K).
Candlelight and sunset are warm (2000-3000K, orange-yellow). Overcast daylight is neutral (5500-6500K). Shade and blue sky are cool (7000-8000K, blue). White balance adjusts the camera (or you in RAW) to render colours correctly.
