Hard light

Hard licht · Light

Direct, unfiltered light that produces sharp, clearly defined shadows.

Hard light comes from a small or distant source: harsh midday sun, a bare flash, a spotlight. It accentuates textures and creates drama. The opposite is diffuse light. In portrait photography hard light is challenging but can produce powerful images.
