A mathematical ratio (approximately 1:1.618) found in nature, used as a guideline for balanced and visually pleasing composition.
The golden ratio predates the rule of thirds and is mathematically more refined. In photography it appears as the Fibonacci spiral: you place your subject at the point where the spiral tightens most. Many photographers find it less intuitive in practice than the rule of thirds.
