Hot shoe

The mounting rail on top of the camera for attaching an external flash or other accessory.
The name "hot shoe" refers to the electrical contacts that allow communication between camera and flash (TTL, HSS). A "cold shoe" has no electrical contacts and is purely mechanical. Besides flashes you can also mount microphones, monitors, or triggers on it.
