DNG (Digital Negative)

DNG · Technique

An open RAW file format developed by Adobe as a universal alternative to manufacturer-specific RAW formats.

Manufacturers like Nikon (NEF), Canon (CR3), and Sony (ARW) each have their own RAW format. DNG is an open standard intended for long-term archiving without dependence on a single manufacturer. Lightroom can convert RAW files to DNG. Downside: conversion takes time, and some camera-specific features may be unavailable.
