Chiaroscuro
Light
A technique borrowed from painting where strong contrast between light and dark creates depth and atmosphere.
The term is Italian for "light-dark". Masters like Rembrandt and Caravaggio used it in painting; in photography you see it in low-key portraiture with a single strong light source. It separates the subject from the background without complex compositions.
