The aesthetic quality of the out-of-focus areas in a photo.
Bokeh comes from the Japanese word for "blur". Beautiful bokeh looks soft and round; harsh bokeh creates hard rings or geometric shapes. The shape of the aperture blades determines bokeh character. A lens with rounded blades produces rounder, softer bokeh.
