A model release is a written agreement in which a photographed person gives you permission to use their image. This tool generates a legally sound version you can download instantly as a PDF. Use it before any shoot where you plan to publish, sell, or commercially license the photos.

When do you actually need a model release?

Any time you shoot a recognizable person and want to use those photos beyond personal, private storage, you need documented consent. That covers stock photography, advertising, editorial use, and social media posts tied to a brand or business account. A verbal agreement does not hold up when a dispute arises.

The specifics vary by country, but the principle is consistent: the subject's right to control how their image is used takes precedence unless they have signed it away. This tool covers the most common use cases and aligns with widely accepted legal standards.

How to use this in your workflow

Fill out the release before you start shooting, not after. Once you have agreed on the scope of the shoot, including the intended use of the images, put it in writing. If you are already planning your session with a Pose Card, that is a natural moment to have the model sign the release as well.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a model release for photos I post on my photography Instagram?

If your account is personal and non-commercial, you may have some leeway, but any monetization or brand involvement changes that. A signed release removes the ambiguity and protects you if the situation changes later.

Can I use one model release for multiple shoots with the same person?

Only if the release explicitly covers future sessions and specifies the scope. A release tied to a single shoot date does not automatically extend to new work, even with the same model.

Is a model release required for editorial photography?

Editorial use (news, documentary, journalism) generally requires less stringent consent than commercial use, but the line is not always clear. For anything that could be perceived as endorsement or advertising, get a signed release.
