Fog Forecast: how it works

The fog forecast calculates the daily chance of ground fog around sunrise for a location you choose. Useful if you're getting up early for an atmospheric shot and don't want to stand around in the dark for nothing. The forecast covers up to a week ahead, with the most certainty in the first few days.

How the fog score is calculated

The score from 0 to 100 combines four weather factors just before and during sunrise: cloud cover, humidity, wind speed and the gap between temperature and dew point. A clear, humid and still night with a small temperature-dew point gap gives the best chance of radiation fog. For roughly the first 60 hours, the forecast also weighs in MET Norway's own fog prediction, so you're not relying on a single source.

A score above 70 counts as high risk, 40 to 70 as moderate and below that as low. If in doubt, pick a day with a moderate score combined with a good location: fog is notoriously unpredictable, and even the best forecast is an estimate, not a guarantee.

When to chase fog

Ground fog forms most often after a clear, calm night, when the ground cools quickly and the air just above it saturates. That means the best chances are in autumn and spring, in low-lying areas near water or along rivers. Check the Golden Hour for that same morning too, since the best fog light often coincides with the first sun breaking through the haze.

Once you're on location, patience beats rushing. Fog tends to drift up and down in thin layers before it clears completely, and those transitions usually produce the best shots.
