The crop factor calculator converts any focal length to its full-frame equivalent, or the other way around. Use it when you're comparing lenses across different camera systems, or when you want to know what angle of view a lens gives on a specific sensor. What crop factor actually means for your images

Every sensor captures a different portion of the image circle projected by a lens. A Nikon or Sony APS-C sensor has a crop factor of 1.5, Canon APS-C sits at 1.6, and Micro Four Thirds at 2.0. A 35mm lens on an APS-C body frames like a 52mm on full frame: a slightly narrower field of view, closer to a standard perspective.

Crop factor also affects apparent depth of field. At the same aperture and equivalent focal length, a smaller sensor produces a deeper depth of field than full frame. If you're shooting on MFT and want thin focus, you need to factor that in when choosing a lens.

Comparing lenses when switching systems

If you're moving from one system to another, or just trying to match a familiar focal length in a new mount, the full-frame equivalent is your reference point. Calculate the equivalent for both lenses and you know exactly how they compare in terms of angle of view.

What is the full-frame equivalent of a 50mm lens on APS-C?

On an APS-C body with a 1.5x crop factor, a 50mm lens behaves like a 75mm on full frame. On Canon APS-C with a 1.6x factor, that becomes 80mm.

Does crop factor change the effective aperture of my lens?

It does not change your exposure, but it does affect the equivalent depth of field. An f/1.8 lens on MFT gives roughly the same depth of field as f/3.5 on full frame at the same equivalent focal length.

How do I find the native focal length I need on MFT to match my 85mm full-frame portrait lens?

Divide the full-frame focal length by the crop factor: 85mm divided by 2.0 gives 42.5mm. A 42mm or 45mm lens on MFT will give you a very similar angle of view.
